Vergers serve the church in a ministry of welcome. Often you’ll see the verger in a church that has one wearing a simple cassock and moving about the church preparing for worship. If you’re new or visiting, a verger is typically the one to respond to inquiries about the upcoming service, church facilities or current program offerings. This logistical support allows the priest more time and attention for pastoral and sacramental responsibilities before worship.
Some say that every parish has a verger whether he/she is identified or not. Typical verger duties include checking the set-up for worship and making sure lectors, chalice bearers and acolytes are in place. Duties are specific to each church and will be worked out by verger and rector in the next few months.
