Concerning What Blue Christmas Is:

St. Christopher’s Blue Christmas Service happens on the longest night of the year and is intended as a space for those experiences and feelings that might not feel most at-home in a “traditional” Christmas worship service.

This space is meant for you who mourn. It is for you who are far from home. It is for you who navigate illness, addiction, or estrangement. It is for you who are lonely, or struggling financially, or are in conflict with another or are reeling from the state of the nation or the world.

Whatever you bring tonight, I hope you can know that you are welcome here.

If you are used to church or if the Christian faith is a regular part of your life, I hope this space can serve your connectedness to God. I hope you can rest in that Presence, especially if you carry something heavy.

If you haven’t set foot in a church or in a worship service in years or ever, I hope what we share together tonight can make you feel held. That the hurts or violence of the church’s history, since its inception, does not diminish the Christmas story that is intended to make room for your story; your brokenness and goodness. I hope that if you feel shaken or broken, or afraid or sad, or angry that you are welcomed in this place just as that barn, when there was no room in the Inn, welcomed a mother and father giving birth to a child in an uncertain and frightening world.

We’ll have traditions which Christianity has employed since its inception to remind you that you’re loved. We’ll also have the musical gifts of those from the community, here and now, to do the same.

Please know that, wherever you are in life, you’re welcome.
