Journey to Adulthood (J2A)
St. Christopher's uses the Journey to Adulthood (J2A) program for young people in grades 6/7 through 12, providing a liturgical frame for their experience in our modern culture. It celebrates their individuality and creative potential, and instructs them in the skills required for successful participation in the church community and society. The program is based on the concepts that manhood and womanhood are gifts from God, but that adulthood must be earned.
Grades 6/7 through 8: Rite-13
Rite-13 assists young people as they take their first steps away from their families into their own lives. It stresses the group as community encouraging friendship and creating a safe place to explore new ideas, new interests and new abilities.
Grades 9 through 10: J2a Sojourners (Sojo)
The J2A Sojo group blends action and contemplation in teaching young people faithful living. This includes making a holy pilgrimage together following their second year in J2A to deepen relationship with God and one another. Upon their return they are able to be confirmed if desired and to take their place in the adult life of the church, acknowledging that they are now equipped for new levels of responsibility.
Grade 11 through 12: "Confirm Not Conform" (CnC)
Guided by adult advisers, members of this group begin to take on new responsibilities in the life of the church and community. They also begin a nine-month long program called "Confirm not Conform" which encourages them to claim their own beliefs and to decide how they will live these out in the world. At the end of the nine-months they are invited to be confirmed if they so choose.
Youth Leaders & Assistants
Although leaders for the Journey to Adulthood program are discerned by a specially designated team and called into this ministry, the rector and DCE always appreciate knowing if you are interested in this ministry. Assistants are also needed for a variety of things, and this group is made up of volunteers.
